Negative Strata

This site-specific installation was realized in a marble quarry in Tuoli, Xinjiang. A laser beam cuts into a dust field generated and controlled by the artist. The particles are blown, stirred, and reshaped in real time, transforming the air into a responsive medium where light becomes visible.

The dust is entirely artificial and interactive. Viewers can alter the geometry simply by walking through it, breathing into it, or shifting the flow of air. Negative Strata inscribes an immaterial geology into the quarry void. Layers of air, dust, and light are not extracted but performed—fleeting strata that appear only through interaction and control.
